Sustainable communities are defined as:
‘Places where people want to live and work, now and in the future (draft RSS 2006:215) Sustainable development is defined as: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’ The future sustainability of the Exe valley settlements is dependent on maintaining balanced communities, whether the community is an area centre or a local centre. A recent survey by the Mid Devon Community Planning Alliance has shown that balanced communities are at the top of the agenda for the future of the Exe Valley towns and villages.
The Exe Valley Plan has been developed using the Market and Coastal Towns initiative process described in Planning for Your Community: A Sourcebook by Alan Caldwell. The Vision for the Exe Valley Plan (page 5) emerged from a series of consultations from July to September 2005, comprising parish meetings for councillors and local community leaders at venues across the Exe Valley and at a stall at the Mid Devon Show 2005, culminating with the discussion at the launch of the initiative at the Tiverton Hotel on 17th September 2005. The Vision is central to the Plan In developing the many aspects of community strategic planning, we have endeavoured to build partnerships with key stakeholders in the community, with public bodies and agencies, service providers, voluntary and community groups, and business organisations. In doing so, we have
pursued the strategic objectives of the MCTi process:
-
To engage with local communities, groups and agencies
-
To develop a community-led, sustainable strategic action plan, with
strategies embodied in projects.
-
To set up a charitable, social enterprise company limited by guarantee
to facilitate projects in the Plan, and update the Plan regularly.
-
To develop good relationships with strategic partners both for
community planning and for project implementation purposes.
-
To develop and enhance good relationships with the private sector.
-
To participate in the consultations on statutory planning documents.
