16. Waste
Mid Devon introduced a new waste disposal and recycling regime in September 2005. Waste collections for landfill are collected once a fortnight instead of once a week. Recycling collections occur once a fortnight on alternate weeks. Recycling includes cooked waste, garden waste, paper recycling, plastic milk bottle recycling, glass and can recycling. It is collected in conjunction with the Mid Devon Community Recycling Service.
The ASHLEY TIP RECYCLING PROJECT and the ANNUAL DISTRICT WIDE LITTER PICK are two projects aimed at
promoted higher rates of recycling and cleaner streets and lanes in the area. The SCHOOL WORMS COMPOSTING PROJECT aims to install vermiculture units in each of the local primary schools, to be used as a teaching aid for the concept of waste reduction and the principles of composting.
16.1 Tiverton has a local Waste Disposal site at Ashley to the south of the town, where waste products are sorted for recycling and landfill. Some recycled goods are already being sold from this site.
16.2 Mid Devon Community Recycling is a nonprofit- making organisation that collects the refuse on behalf of Mid Devon District Council. It collects from 29,454 households across 1,835 roads in 79 towns and villages in Mid Devon. By December 2006 all homes in the Exe Valley area will have collections of all recyclables in brown wheelie bins, black boxes and black bags.
16.3 Tiverton Volunteer Litter Pickers organise regular litter picks in and around Tiverton, and visit schools to talk about litter. School parties take part in litter picks on an organised basis. The annual district wide litter pick promotes the principle of street tidiness on a district wide basis. |
