8.3 Sixth form and further education. East Devon College
8 . 3 . 1 The 2005 inspection report indicates that student achievement at East Devon College is close to the national average, and there have been modest improvements since 2002. Retention and attendance rates are good. Achievement is good to satisfactory across the range of adult to 16-18 year olds and between full and part time students. Among 16-18 year olds, too few achieve well, and too few A-level students progress from A-S courses to A2 courses. Across the courses, there are many where achievement is good, some where achievement is average and a few with poor achievement. Effective work experience is good on some courses, but weak or absent on others where it would be valuable.
8 . 3 . 2 East Devon College have a vacancy for Principal in 2006 that will be filled in January 2007.
8.3.3 East Devon College work with local businesses to provide technical courses appropriate to local business needs.
8.3.4 Preliminary returns from the business survey indicate some dissatisfaction with students moving into the workplace locally in terms of educational achievement, technical ability and fitness for further training. The East Devon College inspection notes that college managers have a detailed understanding of community needs and offer courses that can successfully respond to these.
8.3.5 Achievement is particularly good on adult basic education courses and on access to Higher Education courses.
8.4 Professional level qualifications in the Tiverton Market Town Area
4 . 1 There is a significant difference between Tiverton Town and the market town hinterland in the proportion of professional level qualifications, with the town significantly below the district, county and national averages.
1. 1+‘O’ level passes, 1 CSE/GCSE any grades, NVQ level 1, Foundation GNVQ
2. 5+‘O’ level passes, 5+CSE’s (grade A-C), School Certificate, 1+‘A’ levels/‘AS’ levels, NVQ level 2, Intermediate GNVQ.
3. 2+ ‘A’ levels, 4+‘AS’ levels, Higher School Certificate, NVQ level 3, Advanced GNVQ.

8.5 Nursery and childcare provision.
8.5.1 There are several privately-run nurseries in the market town area.
8.5.2 There has been a significant reorganisation of private nursery provision in Tiverton during the first four months of 2006 with three nurseries closing and two relocating. A threat of inadequate nursery provision was averted when a new nursery gained planning permission to open in the centre of the town.
8 . 5 . 3 Kingfisher Nursery at East Devon College provides out of school childcare facilities for young children as well as day care nursery facilities for children from 6 weeks to 5 years.
8 . 5 . 4 There are nursery groups and playgroups attached to school, and plans to implement the Extended Day.
8.5.5 Tiverton Adventure Playground is open in the
school holidays, with special activities and outings
organised during the summer.
8.6 Children’s and Youth Clubs and
organisations (for Sports Clubs see 13.3)
8.6.1 Some churches and the Community Centres in the area run youth and children’s clubs.
8.6.2 Tiverton has two youth Club Centres and a newly built drop-in Centre in the Market area, the Market Centre, that provides a social meeting place and information, advice and support for young people aged 13-20 years.
8.6.3 The Youth Krew offers a range of volunteering activities to young people, aged 15-25, including conservation, environment and community projects, devised and led by the young people themselves.
8.6.4 The Signpost Club encourages young people to become involved in the annual pantomime production.
The Junior Operatic Club puts on annual operatic productions.
8.6.5 TICVAC (Tiverton & Culm Valley Association for Children with Special Needs) helps children between 4 and 16 years with special needs.
8.6.6 The area has a range of uniformed youth organisations.
