8.2 Secondary

8 . 2 . 1 There is a significant difference in GCSE attainment between Tiverton town students and the students from the rural parishes, with the lowest attainment in Lowman Ward, Tiverton.

8.2.2 Examination results for Tiverton High School are significantly below the neighbouring comprehensives
at Uffculme, Cullompton and Crediton, but are steadily improving.

8 . 2 . 3 The school has a widely-experienced new head teacher who is achieving improved relations with local businesses, and working to gain improved performance, better community relations and closer involvement of families in their children’s educational achievements.

8.2.4 Admissions to Tiverton High School are about 80% of capacity. Numbers are expected to increase due to the high level of house building in the town.

8.2.5 There is a significant drift of potential pupils to secondary schools outside the Tiverton Learning area or to private schools. Many of these are more able students.

8.2.6 There is one private boarding school in the area, Blundells School, which draws pupils from a wide area of Devon and has a significant intake of foreign students. Standards are high, with good examination results and a wide range of extracurricular activity.
