8.1 Primary
8.1.1 Key stage 2 results show that most village schools and the town schools west of the river have achieved better overall results than the town schools to the east of the river which deal with many of the most acute issues related to deprivation. Nevertheless, the LSOA statistics reveal deprivation issues affecting the Westexe area, which both schools in this area face.
8 . 1 . 2 Performance at Wilcombe Primary has improved considerably since 2003. The school was in the top ten nationally most improved schools in 2006. Park Hill Nursery relocated here in 2006.
8.1.3 Issues of deprivation also affect the student intake at Bampton Primary school. This school is currently scheduled to be rebuilt and will include a multi-purpose community room that could be used by Childrens’ Centre personnel visiting Bampton.
8.1.4 Performance at Sampford Peverell Primary weakened between 2003 and 2005, but measures are now being taken to address this situation.
8 . 1 . 5 There is one private school that covers this age range, Blundells Preparatory School.
8.1.6 The Tiverton Learning Community of May 2006 reports 1998 pupils on primary school roles for the area. Rural schools in the learning area are: Bampton, Bickleigh, Bolham, Halberton, and Rackenford. Tiverton primary school numbers on role are 1623 (or 81% of the total). Rural schools have 375 pupils on the rolls (19% of total).
8.1.7 The net capacity of Tiverton primary schools is 1887. Present numbers are 14% short of full capacity. It is anticipated that population increase in the town will more than offset a marginal fall in birthrate. A review of places may be necessary at Wilcombe and at Castle Primaries.
8.1.8 The net capacity of rural primary schools is 415 places. Present numbers are 90% of capacity. Pupil numbers are expected to fall by around 9%. The schools are small but very dispersed, making a change of provision very difficult.
8.1.9 Bampton C. of E. Primary School will be replaced by a four classroom school by the start of the autumn term 2007. This will include a community room that can be used as part of the outreach of the new Children’s Centre in Tiverton.
8 . 1 . 1 0 There is a significant inflow/ outflow of pupils between designated areas within the town and
between rural and town schools.
8.1.11 Schools in the Exe Valley Plan area but not in the Tiverton Learning Community are: Silverton and
Stoke Canon (Clyst Vale Learning Community) with roles of 133 and 161 respectively; Thorverton (Crediton Learning Community) with a role of 81; Burlescombe, Sampford Peverell, Uplowman and Webbers (Culm Valley Learning Community) with roles of 69, 110, 58, and 79 repectively. Uplowman and Webbers have admissions that are significantly over in-area pupil numbers (388% and 164% respectively).
